It looks like Mia Wasikowska and other Australian actors have been invited to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!

A GROUP of Aussies, led by Jacki Weaver, are among an elite group asked to join Hollywood’s most exclusive club.

Weaver and new sensation Mia Wasikowska have been invited to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The academy, which decides the Oscars each year, announced on it had extended invitations to 178 artists and executives “who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures”.

Weaver, 64, scored the first Oscar nomination of her long career this year for her chilling performance in the Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom.
Canberra-born 21-year-old Wasikowska has become Hollywood’s new darling, starring in a mix of critically-acclaimed films and blockbusters including Alice in Wonderland and The Kids Are All Right.

Mia Wasikowska: The quiet observer

Last year, she was ‘Alice.’ This year, she’s ‘Jane Eyre.’ With these and other upcoming roles, the shy young Aussie is cementing her spot in Young Hollywood.

Of all the stars Mia Wasikowska saw at Vanity Fair’s exclusive Oscar party last month, Justin Bieber was the one she found most fascinating. There he was, in all his pint-sized teen idol glory, scurrying around the Sunset Tower with Disney star Selena Gomez in tow.

“They were just, like, snickering and running away somewhere,” the actress, 21, recounted.

But unlike Bieber’s legion of screaming tween fans, Wasikowska wasn’t interested in the romantic status of the pair. Instead, she was struck by how many partygoers also seemed unable to tear their eyes away from the young singer.

“I was thinking, ‘Wow, how do you handle that?’” she said. “I’m so curious about people like that.”

According to Screen Australia, Mia Wasikowska along with a long list of actors and filmmakers will be collobarating on an Australian film titled The Turning. The film is based on a collection of short stories by Tim Winton.

A bit of old news which I forgot to put up here – apologies. Anyway, Mia has signed up for a new production called The Wettest County in the World.

A quartet of actors are the latest to join director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) adaptation of Matt Bondourant’s gangster saga The Wettest County in the World. Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Mia Wasikowska (The Kids are All Right) and Jason Clarke (Public Enemies) are the latest actors to join the project. Shia Labeuof stars in the film which centers on a family of prohibition-era bootleggers. Tom Hardy and Dane Dehaan (True Blood) also star in the film alongside Jessica Chastain (Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life) as Hardy’s love interest. THR reports that Oldman will portray a gangster who enlists Labeuof and his friends has alcohol delivery boys, while Pierce will take on the role of an overtly violent deputy. Wasikowska is set to play Labeuof’s love interest.

When Steve recently sat down with Chastain at Sundance, the actress said The Wettest County is basically a 1930’s gangster film, and they start filming in Atlanta in March. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

Mia Wasikowska circles ‘Wettest,’ ‘Stoker’

Mia Wasikowska’s 2011 could get curiously busy.

The “Alice in Wonderland” thesp is circling both John Hillcoat’s “The Wettest County in the World” and Fox Searchlight’s “Stoker.”

She could do both — but as of right now, a scheduling conflict stands in the way. Negotiations are on hold while her reps and the studios try to work out a schedule.

Both pics have received a fair share of buzz in recent months.
